南 (1)

[character] 南 (1)

“南(nán)” originally meant a type of percussion instrument similar as 钟(zhōng) or 罄(qìng) that was popular in southern China. The oracle bone inscription illustrates the brief shape of this instrument: the upper part is a rope with a knot, while the lower part is the hanged instrument. Besides the instrument, “南” was also borrowed to refer to the place where the instrument was popular. After thousands of years, “南” lost its original meaning of the percussion instrument, but only the meaning of south left. (The original work is exhibited at “Chinese Charming” salon.)
