西 (1)

[character] 西 (1)

“西(xī)” originally meant (birds) resting in their nest, the oracle bone inscription illustrates a bird nest. Due to the same pronunciation between (birds) resting in their nest and the direction where sun sets, “西” was borrowed to mean west as well. After thousands of years, “西” is divided into two characters: 栖 (qī) takes over the meaning of (birds) resting in their nest, while “西” lost its original meaning of (birds) resting in their nest, but only the meaning of west left. (The original work is exhibited at “Chinese Charming” salon.)
